What a month May was!!! May is Preservation Month, and the New Bern Preservation Foundation was extraordinarily busy. With lightning speed, Emily Henson, Carolyn Startsman, Richard Parsons, Betsy Pinkerton, Ann Maude, Mary Parrish and Tim Thompson put together the Behind Closed Doors - Hidden Treasures of New Bern Architecture Tour, designed and printed posters, brochures and tickets and hustled everyone and everywhere. The Tour was a super success, showing what had been done (Blondies had been an auto garage and now had two retail spaces and two apartments) and what hidden potential there was in the Bank of New Bern, Judge Nunn’s 1907 office and the Elks Temple. Also featured were the Charlotte Rhone Cultural Center which began life as the West Street Colored Library and the George Street Mews, three houses which were recently totally renovated. People touring the Fenner House on Hancock Street saw a mind-expanding example of thorough restoration involving lengthy research and exacting standards. We finished the month off with a volunteer appreciation party at the home of Joe and Nancy Mansfield and a free, open to the public, presentation by Myrick Howard, executive director of Preservation North Carolina at the Tryon Palace auditorium. ![]() The Fenner House on the Hidden Treasures Tour Reception for Spring Homes Tour Volunteers
