The FOY - SIMMONS HOUSE is a Greek Revival one story structure located just south of New Bern on Hwy 17 north of Pollocksville. Most of the original interior window and door millwork is intact as well as the walls and flooring. It has a wide center hall with 4 rooms in the original structure. A late 19th or early 20th century addition has 2 rooms. The future location of the house must be approved by the Board of New Bern Preservation Foundation. Proposed covenants: Structures must be relocated, preferably to a suitable site in Jones County, or an adjacent county. When the structures are relocated, they shall be positioned in the same relationship and at the same distance as at present. They may be joined by infill construction. On both structures all exterior siding, trim, corner boards, moldings and front porch shall be preserved. The front porch shall be carefully repaired to match existing work. Both structures shall be covered with a standing seam metal roof (no manufactured metal roof; no barn tin) or a wooden shingle roof with the visible surfaces split, not sawn. The chimneys shall be rebuilt in their existing dimensions. Each chimney may have a brick chimney cap added consisting of one course corbelled in no more than 3/4 inch, over two courses corbelled out no more than 3/4 inch, over one course corbelled out no more than 3/4 inch. Visible brick to be re-used from site and laid in hydraulic lime mortar (no Portland cement). House shall be on a continuous brick foundation. Shutters, made to match the existing shutter in the house, shall be replaced on all main house windows. Main house interior: All washboard (baseboards), window surrounds, window sash and glass, doors and surrounds, flooring, original doors, and front and back door locks shall be retained. Ceilings shall be returned to original height. Chimneys shall be moved with the house or re-built to their original size. Fireplace openings and hearths shall be of salvaged brick laid in hydraulic lime mortar and of the original size. No original partitions shall be moved or removed. The original closets in the NW and SW rooms shall be retained. Later framing in the NW and NE room may be removed. Replacement doors shall match originals. Dining-room/kitchen wing interior: No original partitions shall be moved. Doors and windows and surrounds shall be retained. The new owner is encouraged to retain the bead-board interior wall finish. The suspended chimney may be removed.
